Fashion designer Dutta, the first Indian to make his way at the prestigious MBFW

Shivaji Dutta, a young Kolkata-based designer with love for garments wanting to be known as a sustainable designer has made his way to the prestigious Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (MBFW)in Moscow to be the first Indian designer to showcase at MBFW. The theme of his collection at MBFW was based on ‘Sustainable design’ creating by knitting together thin strips of using scrap leather.

The designer feel that although India brand conscious market but does not think much on environment and sustainability will soon be a big issue as in the West. Thus, he wants to be one of the first to start the concept in a big way and aims to promote sustainable design and take it to the next level, after his successful debut in Moscow.

With the world becoming more and more conscious about sustainable designs a lot of top brands are coming up with a different section catering to sustainable products.

Talking about the Russia market and his future plans Dutta sees Russia as a big potential market for India and is confident of getting good buyers which will help India start supplying to Russia soon.

To begin with he has started looking for distributors and planning to put up multi designer stores where there are lot of designers together working toward making people aware of their product in the next year or two. Dutta wants his designs to be well channeled and plans for collaborations but at a later stage. Dutta is also looking at Canada and London for retail growth.

Although he have got offers from some stores but are being selective as they want to see that the garment not only works for the stores but also picking up, or else it meant end up being just a one-time business.

Dutta is a NIFT, Kolkata pass out with a masters in textile design.
