EU Commission to focus on recovery plans and sustainability investments

In a hard time dealing with the corona virus crisis, the European Commission has announced its new textile strategy in order to strengthen the sector. The new strategies aim to provide a new model and opportunities to raise the bar for the competitiveness, sustainability and resilience of the EU textiles sector, keeping in mind it’s liabilities, restructuring, offshoring, and social & environmental impacts. It will take care of the correspondence and consistency with initiatives under the European Green Deal, the Circular Economy Action Plan, the Industrial Strategy and the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability.

EU textile is practicing sustainability to some extent but still half the percent of textiles are discarded and are used for a shorter period. Challenges aroused by covid-19 are a matter of huge concern for the EU textile Commission. The initiative will enhance the implementation of recovery plans and sustainability investments in processes like production, design development, new materials business models and infrastructure. Supporting digital and green transition will also lead to the advancement and innovation of textiles and recycling processes.

To propagate the gender for sustainable and circular textiles in European markets, it needs to focus on reuse & recycling efforts and give public procurement in Europe. Practices like sustainable production, sustainable lifestyles, presence of substances of concern, recycling in member states can be tackled to make the textile ecosystem fall under a circular economy. It will also stimulate products as a service and other sustainable business models. Also, the EU commission is open for public opinions and feedback for their strategies till the 2nd of February 2021.
