Eri silk from Assam receives Oeko-Tex certification

Eri Silk, a renowned product from Assam, India, has achieved a significant milestone by receiving the esteemed Oeko-Tex certification, marking a transformative moment for the Indian textile industry. The announcement, made on August 15th, highlights the growing importance of sustainable practices in the sector.

The certification is a major achievement for the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region’s (DoNER) North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC). Known as the world’s only vegan silk, Eri Silk’s production method is unique as it allows the silk moth to naturally emerge from its cocoon, preserving the integrity of the silk strands and aligning with global demand for eco-friendly fabrics.

Already a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Assam, Eri Silk’s authenticity and regional significance are further validated by this endorsement. The certification is expected to open new export opportunities and increase global recognition for Eri Silk, positioning it strongly in the sustainable textile industry.

As the fashion industry increasingly shifts towards sustainable and ethical choices, Eri Silk is poised to become a key player in the eco-friendly fabric market. This accomplishment reflects India’s commitment to sustainable development and highlights the country’s growing influence in the global textile market.
