DSM forms CirculariTeam coalition to make Dyneema from waste

Royal DSM, a multinational science-based organization in agriculture, fitness, and sustainable living has established the CirculariTeam coalition with business partners to accelerate the transition to renewable bio- and recycled-based energy. CirculariTeam plans to achieve the technological viability of Dyneema fiber production from post-consumer waste by the end of 2021.

With the aim of closing the loop on Dyneema, the world’s toughest fiber, CirculariTeam offers a shared forum for sharing knowledge, resources, and technical solutions.

The cross-industry coalition is made up of companies from all over the supply chain that uses Dyneema from DSM in their products. Within its respective sector, CirculariTeam seeks to accelerate the transition to renewable bio- and recycled-based energy. This aligns with DSM’s vision and goal of enabling a circular economy and preserving material value for as long as possible.

Reverse logistics, recycle and reuse strategies, increased manufacturing quality (including waste reduction), differentiation of waste into material components, design for circularity, regulation, and information exchange are the seven priority areas defined by CirculariTeam. The parties have also started working together on these, with CirculariTeam aiming to show the technological viability of producing new Dyneema fiber from post-consumer waste by the end of 2021.

Via annual summits and continuing communication, the alliance will continue to reassess its ambitions and review success in the coming years.

The co-chairman of CirculariTeam and president DSM Protective Materials, Roeland Polet said that DSM is committed to ensuring the long-term supply of natural resources and maximizing the potential of those that are available. CirculariTeam would have another way to do so, in accordance with DSM Protective Materials’ current sustainability goals. They will provide solutions and development that support both business and community as a whole when they work together with their partners.

Senior vice president Global Maritime Lankhorst Ropes, Wilco Stroet said they support the CirculariTeam coalition’s goals because they believe it is their duty to leave the planet in a stronger state than they find it. Sustainability has long been seen as a core factor of development at Lankhorst Ropes, and it is something they fully support as part of their effort to promote circularity whenever possible.

CEO, NP Aerospace, James Kempston said Dyneema is a critical part of NP Aerospace’s life-saving armor, and they use a lot of it every year. They are delighted to join the CirculariTeam. It provides a vital platform for cross-industry cooperation on issues like recycling and recycled materials. They’ve been working with DSM for over 15 years, and it’s obvious that they’re at the forefront of industrial creativity and environmental initiatives. They are excited to be a part of this alliance because it will allow them to not only help meet customers’ and needs for more sustainable, circular goods but also to jointly create a better environment for future generations.
