DSM has collaborated with Sympatex Technologies to launch a thermoplastic elastomer that is bio-based Arnitel. With this innovation, DSM is moving towards a bio-based circular economy.
As DSM explains the increasing rate of infusion of bio-based materials in the sports and apparel value chain and the growing demand from customers for lower carbon footprint and sustainable alternatives. They are offering mass balance biobased Arnitel manufactured by Sympathetic Technologies. The end product contains more than 25% of biobased content by weight.
With Arnitel material waterproof, windproof and breathable membranes are made for sports clothing and the material provides unique functional properties as well. It is a very beneficial sustainable substitute.
Caroline Mittlerlehner, Vice President Specialities DSM Engineering Materials, also appreciated their partnership and their agenda for moving towards a sustainable journey and carrying out a transition from fossils to renewable resources. It is adding biobased alternatives to its portfolio which is benefiting everyone in the supply chain, suppliers to customers and sports brands. The mass balance approach provides a set of rules for how to allocate the bio-based or recycled content to different products to be able to claim and market the content as ‘bio’ based or ‘recycled’ based.
