Danish fashion label Ganni has become the most recent brand to receive the B Corp certification, with a score of 90.6 points. It also holds the record for the best score among current fashion labels.
Due to a consistent push toward using certified organic, low-impact, and recycled fibers, which are utilized for the bulk of the brand’s collections, Ganni received the highest points from its efforts under the environment segment throughout the five impact categories, receiving 29.1 points.
Ganni was not awarded points for its use of novel materials through its Fabrics of the Future initiative or for its insetting strategy, an alternative to carbon offsetting that sees the brand invest directly in its own supply chain.
The company expressed its hope that the B Corp framework would become more adaptable in the future so that similar initiatives may be considered in next evaluations.
A rigorous application procedure with over 300 questions on the company’s performance in five critical impact areas—governance, employees, community, environment, and customers—is necessary to become certified as a B Corp. Companies may only remain certified if they make ongoing investments that show a genuine commitment to their social and environmental effect.
Through its carbon Insetting program, scaling up novel materials, and supporting circular business models, the company hopes to attain 150 B Corp points by 2025.
Nicolaj Reffstrup, Founder of Ganni said that for years, he has hoped for industry-wide audits of sustainability efforts because they are still mostly uncontrolled. Businesses are left to govern themselves as long as their politicians continue to demonstrate that they lack the courage to advance the green agenda through law.
Reffstrup added that B Corp provides a concrete and open structure for holding companies responsible and establishing standards for the sector. Being accredited is proof of the effort their team has put forth in their quest to develop into the most responsible versions of themselves. Although achieving 90.6 points is the reason for celebration, much work remains.
