Crystal Denim creates first-ever net-zero jeans

Crystal Denim, the denim division of Crystal International, has produced what it calls the first net zero jeans.

According to Crystal Denim, it has long been a priority to create sustainable goods. Crystal International made a further commitment to achieve net zero by 2050 earlier this year. Crystal Denim prepared for creating net zero jeans by signing up for the HKQAA experimental Net-Zero Certificate Scheme.

The HKQAA, a company that offers conformity assessment and accreditation services of environmental, quality, social, and other management systems, has certified the five-pocket jeans made of denim.

According to Crystal Denim, it is the only business testing this reward system for reaching product-level net zero, showcasing its competitiveness in the market for the production of low-carbon denim goods. Additionally, Crystal International is acknowledged as the Pilot Scheme’s Pioneering Organization for Net-Zero Contribution.

The net-zero jeans were the initial step in creating net zero items, laying the groundwork for rapid net zero product creation and demonstrating the group’s capacity and commitment to net zero commitment, according to Crystal. Crystal Denim used the cradle-to-gate product lifecycle assessment for the carbon accounting approach, which was approved by HKQAA, to achieve net zero jeans.

The company uses sustainable materials and a “Good by Design” philosophy to create goods that have a minimal impact on the environment. Additionally, Crystal Denim implemented decarbonization initiatives throughout all production stages, including laser technology, an onsite solar PV system for energy conservation, innovative front-loading washing machines, a drying hanger system for pre-drying, and cutting-edge energy-saving dryers. The corporation also helped Nicaraguan reforestation efforts to offset any remaining carbon emissions.

Miles Lam, assistant general manager, sales and business development of Crystal Denim, said that they think it is possible to achieve net zero product. Their first step in recognizing the importance of climate effect at each stage of the product lifecycle is the achievement of the Net-Zero Certificate. They always consider ways to make products with less of an impact on the environment and to incorporate more green practices into every level of the production process. In order to continue creating more net zero items, they also look forward to working with other fashion brands and supply chain partners.

A thematic website for the Crystal Net Zero 2050 goal has also been launched by the group, outlining the multifaceted net-zero strategy, decarbonization progress, and accomplishments. The website aims to reinforce that Crystal International supports efforts against climate catastrophe and contributes to keeping global warming to 1.5°C by highlighting Crystal’s commitment to net zero emissions by 2050.
