CovationBio partners with Primient Covation to support sustainable farming

CovationBio partners with Primient Covation LLC, to implement and track sustainable agricultural practices with U.S. midwestern corn growers.

CovationBio, a global leader in innovative bio-based material solutions, and Primient Covation LLC, the largest global producer of 100% plant-based 1,3-propanediol (Bio-PDO®), announced that they will be taking part in Primient’s Sustainable Agriculture Program and partnering with Truterra, LLC, the sustainable agriculture business of Land O’Lakes and program delivery partner.

Truterra is a ground-breaking continuous improvement program that is driven by farmers and encourages the widespread adoption and success of sustainable, regenerative agricultural methods in the United States. Truterra makes use of cutting-edge technology to give farmers the ability to focus and assess the effectiveness of environmental protection initiatives. The initiative aids in ensuring that maize, the feedstock used in the products of CovationBio and Primient Covation, complies with the highest standard of sustainable practices.

CovationBio’s and Primient Covation’s participation supports in the Midwest of the United States implement sustainable and regenerative farming methods on a scale equal to 100% of the agricultural footprint of corn used in the production of their products, Susterra® PDO, Zemea® PDO, and Sorona® polymer.

Michael Saltzberg, CEO, CovationBio, said that their mission to unlock transparency throughout the supply chain is ideally aligned with the work of the revolutionary Truterra program. This commitment is at the heart of what they do and why they strive so hard to offer renewably sourced alternatives to conventional petroleum-based materials. Creating a product from plant-based feedstock alone is insufficient; the feedstock must also be farmed sustainably. Their participation in the Primient program is an essential next step in enabling their partners to better track their contributions to reducing the environmental footprint within their supply chain.

Without the groundbreaking collaboration between Primient and Truterra, this pledge would not be feasible. With an area scope that represents 100% of the maize it purchases internationally each year, Primient (previously Tate & Lyle) launched a sustainable agriculture partnership with Truterra in 2018. Now, as part of the scheme, Truterra allots the same quantity of enrolled acres to Primient Covation’s annual corn-based feedstock consumption. This set a baseline year of 2021 from which to gauge the annual impact of Primient Covation.

In comparison to the industry benchmark of 10%, the program gives visibility of environmental impact-related data on 100% of acres, and its year-over-year outcomes show slight advancements over predetermined baselines.

Truterra supports regenerative and sustainable farming operations by introducing cutting-edge methods and procedures that, when used properly and in the appropriate setting, have been shown to increase soil health over the long term. Participating farmers create a baseline for field stewardship, identify areas for improvement, and simulate the effects of different conservation measures and management adjustments on field stewardship and profitability using the Truterra sustainability tool and a network of agronomy advisers. The Truterra sustainability tool, part of the program’s digital platform, gives farmers comprehensive insights into every agricultural field, putting them in charge of improving sustainable practices that are advantageous to them, the feedstock users, and the environment.

Insights into sustainability tools offer suggestions intended to address aspects including GHG emissions, rates of wind and water erosion, and trends in soil quality.

Saltzberg added that by taking part in the program, they can help their customers enhance transparency, set objectives, and evaluate success by using agricultural feedstock that is ethically sourced to create products like Sorona®, Zemea®, and Susterra®. This is becoming more crucial for their cherished partners and customers. They have the reassurance that the maize they use is responsibly sourced thanks to their collaboration.

In an effort to shift the game, CovationBio and Primient Covation are assisting the textile and material markets in moving away from linear production and toward a renewable and circular economy.
