Cone Denim, Unifi create S Gene an eco-friendly stretch denim fabric

Cone Denim leading supplier of denim fabrics to top denim apparel brands since 1891 announced that the company is incorporating Unifi’s Repreve brand yarn, a recycled material into a stretch denim fabric called S Gene introduced a decade ago.

Delores Sides, a spokesman for Cone Denim, said that the company’s S Gene stretch technology dates back to 2007. Back then it was described by Cone Denim as a “breakthrough” collection of premium stretch technology that conformed to the body without sacrificing softness.

What is new is being able to use the Repreve fiber within S Gene, which makes it a more sustainable fabric, Sides said.

S Gene product made with Repreve is made at an ITG plant in either Mexico or China. They purchase the Repreve from Unifi, and produce the denim fabric.

Cone Denim, a division of Greensboro-based International Textile Group, is teaming up with Unifi on these fabric innovations after announcing plans last month to close its historic White Oak mill in Greensboro by the end of the year.

Cone Denim’s global platforms include denim operations in the United States, Mexico and China. Cone Denim is focused on effectively serving the worldwide market with quality products and superior service.
