Companies establish supply chain for sustainable polyester

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-07-09 13:14:29 – Finland

A consortium of seven companies has launched a “world-first” supply chain for more sustainable polyester. The collaboration includes Finland-based energy company Neste, project owner Goldwin, Mitsubishi Corporation, engineering consultant Chiyoda Corporation, chemical manufacturer SK Geocentric, sustainable petrochemical firm Indorama Ventures, green chemists India Glycols, and Neste.

The partnership aims to use renewable and bio-based materials, alongside carbon capture and utilization, in manufacturing polyester fibers for The North Face in Japan. Neste will supply Neste RE, a raw material made from bio-based materials such as waste and residues, to replace fossil fuels in polyester production. According to Neste, using Neste RE can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 85% compared to fossil feedstock, while maintaining the same quality.

The produced polyester fiber will be used by The North Face for a portion of its products, including sports uniforms, by next year. The collaboration will employ a mass balancing approach to ensure traceability of material streams throughout the supply chain. The consortium aims to promote the defossilization of materials, contributing to a more sustainable society.
