Calik Denim, the Turkish denim mill created a QR Code Integrated System that allows customers to scan a code on a hangtag to get information on the fabric’s fiber origin, LCA scores, and environmental effect across eight distinct dimensions, compared to the industry average of five.
Climate change, photochemical oxidation, energy demand, acidification, land usage, water consumption, eutrophication, and ozone depletion are among the various parameters.
Clients can get information across all fields and a fabric profile with composition details, vendor information, and certification details by scanning the QR code with their mobile device.
Calik Denim conducts cradle-to-gate life-cycle assessments on its goods. Its LCA data is independently validated and now covers 240 items, with 90 of them being certified in 2021 alone.
Calik’s QR Code Integrated System debuts with 56 QR-coded goods, including bestsellers and the current Sequency fabric line for Fall/Winter 22-23.
Calik Denim’s deputy general manager of sales and marketing, Tolga Ozkurt, said that they believe that this system, in which data can be audited and measured using globally accepted values, is a pioneering development for sustainability in both the denim and fashion industries. It will create much greater awareness and impact if brands continue this cycle and transparently share all the steps up until the product reaches the end consumer.
The launch is part of Calik’s “Passion for Denim, Passion for Life” sustainability strategy, which focuses on three major pillars: pioneering new goods, generating a positive effect for stakeholders, and minimizing environmental impact.
Calik collaborated with Aware, a tracer and blockchain technology developed by Dutch firm The Movement, to track its recycled cotton and polyester. Aware can tell the difference between fake and real sustainable fabric with a simple scan.
Aware’s tracer particles are introduced to the fiber during the pre-production process to verify that the original recycled feedstock was used in the end product and to enable firms more precisely assess their environmental impact objectives.
