Brooks Running, a US sportswear company, has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, beginning with the release of its first carbon-neutral running shoe.
The commitment was made as part of the brand’s new 2030 earth strategy, a science-based approach that the company claims would take responsibility for its environmental effect.
The company intends to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2023 by implementing new climate action and sustainable consumption initiatives, such as a take-back program and a commitment to utilizing 100% recycled polyester in its footwear.
Brooks stated that it will cut emissions first through its strong climate roadmap, which includes important decarbonization measures such as switching facilities to renewable power, converting textile yarns to low-impact dyeing procedures, and procuring materials with recycled content.
Brooks would purchase high-quality carbon credits from initiatives that avoid or minimize carbon emissions from entering the atmosphere in collaboration with carbon offset firm ClimateCare. The initiatives are based both in the United States and abroad.
Brooks has announced that it will start offsetting emissions through the latest iteration of its first carbon-neutral product which will be launched on July 1, the Ghost running shoe.
The footwear company also intends to use fewer non-renewable resources. In 2022, Brooks will start a take-back program that it claims will lay the framework for a completely circular shoe in the years to come. In addition, by 2025, the firm has pledged to produce no footwear waste for landfills or incineration.
Senior manager of corporate responsibility at Brooks Running, David Kemp, said that they think that running has the power to transform your day, your life, and even the planet. However, in order to make those advantages available to everyone, they must engage on a global basis. Because partnerships will be crucial to attaining their ambitious goals, they’ve mapped their program to support the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and joined The Climate Pledge.
