The Minister for Agriculture on Saturday inaugurated M/s Bombyx Mori Silks & Textiles, a silk yarn reeling, twisting and weaving unit, first of its kind in the Valley at SIDCO Industrial Estate Khanmoh, phase-II.

The unit is equipped with a multi-end silk reeling and twisting machine which has the technology from Central Silk Technological Research Institute Bangalore, pioneers in the Silk Industry.

The unit besides AAA Bivoltine cocoons for raw yarn, also processes the low grade cocoons and double cocoons to produce Dupion Silk Yarn, as the earlier low grade cocoons had no takers in the Valley.

A demonstration of processing of cocoon into fabric was given in presence of the minister.

The promoter of the company Maajid Hayat has returned to Valley from the Middle East to pursue and revive the silk industry in Kashmir. Hayat on the occasion said that the quality of silk yarn produced on the multi end reeling machine from the bivoltine cocoon is of high grade and yields very high quality yarn which can be compared to the Chinese Silk.

The fabric produced from this yarn is considered to be organic in nature and has high demand in the European countries.

Director Sericulture Dr Malik Muhammad Farooq, Managing Director JK Agro and Ex Member Legislative Assembly G M Bawan were present at the inaugural function.
