The Bengal Fashion Expo 2017, a collaborative venture between the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC) and a premier hospital chain which was held at a five stat hotel last night, seven leading designers from East Agnimitra Paul, to Sharbari Datta and Shamlu Dudeja came up with their unique winter wear cotton collection defining a new way of fashion for people of Kolkata, said Dr Rupali Basu, Director of the 'Bengal Fashion Expo' and CEO of a leading hospital group.
In sync with the theme, eminent fashion-designer Agnimitra Paul unveiled her collection of long jackets with quilt effect in bright red, orange, brown, electric blue, aqua green, dull yellow hues contrasted with saree, dhoti, lungi, half pant embossed with Madhubani painting motifs.
In solidarity with the acid attack victims in the state of West Bengal, rest of India and elsewhere, Paul introduced two women from Murshidabad and Kolkata as show- stoppers in her show 'Cover-Up.'
The duo had their faces badly bruised in such attacks by in-laws and neighbours respectively, but never gave up the battle.
Fashion designer Sharbari Datta also came up with her range of raw silk, khadi and tussar yards to the accompaniment of background music by ace percussionist Pt Bickram Ghosh.
BCC President Sutanu Ghosh said that the chambers had approached Basu and her team to devise something for the textile apparel industry and that is how the ball set rolling and the two sides came together.
Layers of cotton have more to do with a new way of fashion in a city like Kolkata with eight months of summer and only four months of winter, that too mostly mild cold, hence the unique fashion show's accent was on promoting cotton which is more afforadable than silk.
