Bcomp, Tras introduce flax-based composites to moto racing

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2025-03-12 16:00:40 – Switzerland

Swiss cleantech innovator Bcomp has partnered with Japanese composite specialist Tras to bring natural fibre solutions to the world of motorcycle racing. Expanding on their previous collaborations in luxury furniture and motorsports, this marks the duo’s first venture into racing bike manufacturing.

Tras, which has been producing Suzuki’s MotoGP bodywork for over 20 years, recently incorporated Bcomp’s flax-based composites into the award-winning Suzuki GSX-RR, replacing conventional carbon fibre with sustainable natural fibre materials.

The ampliTex and powerRibs composites offer a greener alternative to pure carbon parts, reducing the CO₂ footprint by up to 85% while improving safety with their ductile fracture behaviour. These materials don’t splinter upon impact like carbon fibre, minimizing risk to riders.

Natsumi Nitta, General Manager at Tras, emphasized the impact of this shift, "Using natural fibre has been a turning point in MotoGP, reshaping the motorsports industry. This collaboration is about more than winning races—it’s about shaping the future of motorcycles."

Johann Wacht, Bcomp’s Business Development Manager, highlighted the industry shift toward sustainability, "With race organizers demanding greener alternatives, our work with Tras proves that bio-based materials can seamlessly integrate into high-performance racing, paving the way for sustainable motorsports."
