Textiles and Jute Minister Md Emaz Uddin Pramanik on Monday told Parliament in the last fiscal year of 2014-15, Bangladesh falls back by 45 percent to achieve it export target of the jute-products, as some 117,953 tonnes of jute products were exported in the last fiscal year against the target of 215,540 tonnes.
While, in the current fiscal of 2015-16 against the target set to export 213,955 tonnes of jute product, some 7.55 million bales (1bale=180 kg) of jute was produced in the country.
The demand and sale of jute products, manufactured by Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) registered a fall following the implementation of the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010, he explained.
In the last fiscal, Bangladesh exported some 1.0 million bales of raw jute and earned foreign currency of Tk 8.17 billion, the minister noted.
In the first six months of the current fiscal, Bangladesh exported 0.54 million bales of raw jute and earned foreign currency to the tune of Tk 4.74 billion.-Asfar
The raw jute is exported to India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Germany, Korea, Brazil, Djibouti, Russia, Vietnam, Ivory Coast, the USA, the UK, El Salvador, Iraq and Iran.
