Avient Corp introduces sustainable, vibrant color technology in fabrics

Avient Corp., international polymer services company has created colors and additives for textiles that uses a process that eliminates conventional bath dyeing. This technique, also known as solution dyeing or spin dyeing, uses up to 90% less water and 60% less energy, decreases carbon dioxide emissions and reduces chemical consumption.

Polymers are combined with a specialized colorant and additive masterbatch, then melted to create solution-dyed fibers. The colorful fibers are created by pushing the liquid through a spinneret, and the resulting fabric needs no further dyeing.

Vice president of Sustainability at Avient, Walter Ripple, said that they at Avient are well-versed in this technology, which provides a sustainable alternative to the way textiles are manufactured, one that promises to preserve water and energy while decreasing carbon emissions and chemical waste.

According to Grand View Research, the worldwide synthetic fibers market will grow at a 6.6 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from $62.7 billion in 2021 to $99.8 billion in 2025. Solution dyeing presently accounts for a small portion of this industry, but it is expected to increase as textile manufacturers and brand owners strive to become more sustainable in order to satisfy consumer and regulatory demands.

Ripple added that at their 10 fully equipped fiber laboratories strategically situated across the world, they collaborate with big brands and textile producers. They enable fibers with bright, sustainable color and industry-leading performance in everything from apparel, technical textiles, and car interiors to nonwovens and artificial turf.
