Materials science company, Avery Dennison Corp., announced the acquisition of TexTrace AG (TexTrace), a technology developer specializing in custom-made woven and knitted RFID solutions that may be sewn onto or inserted into clothes.
TexTrace was previously a division of Jakob Müller Holding, a textile OEM headquartered in Frick, Switzerland. The acquisition includes ownership of TexTrace’s intellectual property portfolio as well as its personnel, who will remain in Frick, Switzerland, allowing Avery Dennison to continue to innovate and drive adoption in the garment sector while also unlocking prospects in non-apparel markets.
The innovative technology created by TexTrace allows for the full integration of RFID into garments. Brand labels with RFID embedded in are an all-in-one solution for product branding, brand and theft protection, product availability, consumer contact, and greater convenience, such as self-checkout. In the future, it may provide unprecedented supplier and material information to support the circular economy through re-ccommerce and recycling, allowing for insights into the full carbon footprint of the garment.
Francisco Melo, vice president and general manager, Avery Dennison Smartrac, said that this is a fascinating purchase for Avery Dennison since it broadens their digital ID portfolio to include integrated RFID solutions for the apparel market. TexTrace’s innovative woven and knitted RFID products will add significant value to the traditional way the apparel and retail sectors use RFID, creating the opportunity for a more sustainable and intelligent future where digital ID’s can live with the life of the garment.
Stephan Bühler, co-owner of Jakob Müller Holding AG and previous CEO of TexTrace AG, said that this is a fantastic opportunity and a game-changing move for the future of TexTrace AG. They’re proud of what the company has accomplished in its 10-year history, and they are delighted that they can now help it take the next step in its development. This is coming at the right time and with the appropriate partner.
