Autoneum has developed E-Fiber flame shields for electric vehicles, which stand out for their high-temperature resistance, lightweight structure, and durability. As the number of EVs using lithium-ion batteries continues to grow worldwide, the biggest concern is thermal runaway, a situation where the battery heats up uncontrollably, potentially leading to fires or explosions.
Unlike traditional shields made from heavy, fragile mineral materials like mica, E-Fiber is light, strong, and stable, offering superior fire protection and resistance to extreme heat blasts. Its flexibility also allows it to be shaped as needed, ensuring better battery coverage and design adaptability.
These shields are made from a composite of reinforcing fibers and resin, forming thin yet strong layers of about 1 to 2 millimeters in thickness. They can withstand temperatures up to 1,400°C, providing high resistance to heat, particle abrasion, and gas pressure. The non-conductive fibers further improve electrical insulation for enhanced safety.
E-Fiber flame shields can be installed between battery cells and the cover or between the battery and the vehicle floor to offer better protection in case of battery failure. The shields have already passed battery safety tests and are currently under development with multiple European automakers.
