Ascend Performance Materials initiates new greenhouse gas reduction unit

Ascend Performance Materials has initiated the operation of a new thermal reduction unit (TRU) in Pensacola, Florida, aimed at reducing over 98% of greenhouse gas emissions linked to adipic acid production. This marks a substantial improvement to Ascend’s efforts in 2021, involving the addition of a control device. With a total investment exceeding $50 million, Ascend is making strides at the world’s largest integrated nylon site to enhance sustainability.

Last year, Ascend raised its target to achieve a 90% reduction in scope 1 emissions by 2030 as part of its broader sustainability vision. Chris Johnson, Ascend’s senior director of sustainability, emphasized the company’s commitment to impactful and enduring sustainability improvements. The TRU project employs advanced technology in a high-temperature reducing environment to permanently eliminate N2O, a potent greenhouse gas.

The TRU project incorporates robust monitoring with calibrated flow meters and a continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS). It undergoes third-party audits to ensure compliance with internationally recognized protocols for emission reductions.

Phil McDivitt, Ascend’s president and CEO, expressed pride in reaching this milestone and highlighted the ongoing commitment to sustainability. Beyond emissions, Ascend continues to address waste reduction, water conservation, safety enhancement, career development, and community support through the Ascend Cares Foundation.
