A new cap made of biodegradable and recyclable fiber material has been developed by dairy cooperative Arla Foods and Swedish start-up Blue Ocean Closures, which specializes in sustainable closures. Arla may see a 500-metric-ton annual reduction in its plastic consumption as a result of the closure.
Arla is currently focusing on reducing the environmental impact of the closure in order to fulfill its commitment to eliminate virgin plastic derived from fossil fuels in packaging by 2030. Caps account for approximately 23% of the plastic packaging that is used in Arla’s cartons.
“Working on our bundling, including decreasing our utilization of plastic, is basic to us and we realize that shoppers are additionally exceptionally put resources into this area. According to Peter Girtz-Carlsen, chief commercial officer at Arla Foods, “This project to investigate what could very well be the first fiber-based cap on milk cartons is very exciting and shows that we at Arla are constantly looking to improve and lead the transformation of sustainable packaging.”
Blue Ocean will construct a fully functional cap prototype with assistance from Arla Foods and conclude testing in early 2024.
