Allbirds launches new running shoe that offsets its carbon footprint

Allbirds, a sustainable footwear, and clothing firm, has revealed a new running shoe that it claims does not sacrifice performance while also offsetting its own carbon footprint.

Allbirds’ new Tree Flyer performance running shoe is stated to have a carbon footprint of 9.92 kg CO2e, which is offset to zero.

The Tree Flyer, created at the junction of revolutionary technology, renewable natural materials, and immediate material circularity, is stated to offer more bounce, more propulsion, and a 70% rebound rate that lets runners have more energy with every step owing to SwiftFoam technology.

While most midsoles are constructed of petroleum and are entirely synthetic, SwiftFoam uses natural castor beans, a renewable natural resource with a 20% smaller carbon footprint than a petroleum-based alternative.

Furthermore, practically all of the trash generated during the midsole manufacturing process is immediately repurposed to make the exterior heel counter.

The Tree Flyer’s bouncy, airy SwiftFoam midsoles, according to Allbirds, are approximately 30% more responsive, 25% lighter, and require less energy to manufacture than its existing SweetFoam technology, with the shoe weighing in at 269g, making it the lightest running shoe made exclusively by Allbirds.

The shoe also has a knit construction constructed from Allbirds’ unique eucalyptus-based Tree fiber that helps hold the foot for a performance fit while also offering breathability and greater durability, as well as a new zonal traction pattern that provides enough grip while preserving flexibility.

Tim Brown, co-CEO and co-founder of Allbirds, said that the Tree Flyer is a remarkable technological and environmental triumph. Getting this blend perfect, without sacrificing runner performance or leaving the planet behind, is one of their team’s biggest challenges and possibilities.
