All Deckers brands to ban alpaca wool after PETA appeal

Deckers Outdoor Corporation, which owns the brands UGG, Koolaburra, Sanuk, HOKA, and Teva, has pledged to stop using alpaca wool by the fall of 2023 after PETA released a groundbreaking exposé showing that alpacas used for their wool are brutally shorn, sliced open, and left bleeding from serious wounds. PETA is sending the business a box of delectable vegan chocolates as a token of appreciation.

PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman, said that countless alpacas won’t be jerked by the tail, yanked around, and left bloodied from shearing thanks to Deckers. PETA encourages all businesses to take this kind action, as alpaca fleece belongs only on the animals born with it.

According to PETA’s undercover investigation, workers slammed alpacas—some of whom were pregnant—onto tables, tied them firmly by the legs to a rack, and pulled firmly until their legs were almost torn out of their sockets. As workers seized the animals by the ears, rough sheared them for their wool, shoddy patched up their gory cuts, and flung them onto the concrete floor, the scared creatures spat, yelled out, and vomited in fear.

The company has joined more than 70 other brands in eliminating alpaca wool, including Lands’ End, Williams Sonoma, UNIQLO, Esprit, Ann Taylor, LOFT, Columbia, and PETA is urging Anthropologie to do the same.
