German sporting goods giant, Adidas, unveiled its first product made in part with Spinnova fibers, eight months after announcing a collaboration with the Finnish textile material company Spinnova of the same name.
The Adidas TERREX HS1 is a unisex mid-layer for hikers that rolls into its hood for easy storage and was designed for Adidas’ outdoor brand TERREX.
It is created in part with Spinnova technology, which uses a minimum of 25% wood-based fibers that are mechanically ground to prevent the use of toxic chemicals. The remaining portion of the product is comprised of organic cotton. The garment also uses less water than a traditional dyeing method because it works with the natural color of the material rather than dying or bleaching chemicals.
Adidas is an investor of Spinnova who is striving to increase the use of the company’s fibers in more products. Adidas stated that the collaboration is part of its journey to develop nine out of ten pieces with more sustainable technology, material, design, or manufacturing process by 2025.
Carla Murphy, General Manager of Adidas TERREX, said that Adidas’ commitment to sustainability is historic. Progress is about always learning and moving forward – and for Adidas, this includes collaborating to innovate in new areas. Terrex is on a mission to increase the sustainability of its technical wear, and they’re always exploring new solutions to help end plastic waste. Working with Spinnova is another step in the right direction.
Janne Poranen, CEO and co-founder of Spinnova, said that Spinnova is on a mission to revolutionize the world textile industry’s raw material base by producing radically sustainable and high-performance textile materials. They’re extremely proud of the groundbreaking accomplishments that their teams have achieved together. This launch is a significant step forward in their combined commercial journey.
From July 2022, a limited amount of Adidas TERREX HS1 will be commercially accessible online and at select retail outlets.
