Adidas and Allbirds launches low-carbon running sneakers in 4 cool colorways

Sportswear giant Adidas and sustainability-focused footwear brand Allbirds, have launched the latest iteration of their low carbon emission shoes, dubbed the Adizero x Allbirds 2.94 KG CO2e.

The shoe, which will be available in four colors, is the new iteration of last year’s FutureCraft.Footprint shoes, with each pair having a carbon footprint of 2.94 kg CO2e and created with 63% less emissions.

The shoes’ bio-based EVA midsole is made of sugarcane, while the upper, lining, and laces are constructed of recycled polyester and natural lyocell, a fiber made from sustainably grown wood.

With the launch of the Futurecraft in 2020, Adidas and Allbirds declared their partnership effort to confront the climate change crisis head-on. In May 2021, Footprint shoes were rated as the most sustainable in the world.

Kimia Yaraghchian, Product Manager at Adidas said that as they are already in the midst of climate change, it is crucial to demonstrate to people that industries can turn the switch now and that there is still hope to contribute to avoiding surpassing the 1.5° objective.

Yaraghchian added that importantly, the debut of the Adizero x Allbirds 2.94 kg CO2E demonstrates that shared ambition may help scale the production of low-carbon running shoes. This effort has created the groundwork for achieving the aim of decarbonization. All of the lessons learned from this initiative have been immediately applied to the development of new running shoes, allowing them to reduce their carbon footprint more swiftly. So keep an eye out for additional innovative running shoes that will revolutionize the market.

Hana Kajimura, Allbirds’ Head of Sustainability, said that climate change is a daunting task, but the success of this project demonstrates how two teams can collaborate to create a shoe that is both functional and environmentally friendly. With this sneaker, they hope to motivate others to open up their development processes and collaborate with one another to build the most carbon-efficient designs possible.
