Accelerating Circularity launches cellulosic textile-to-textile trials

Accelerating Circularity announces the launch of Cellulosic textile-to-textiles trials in Europe as a continuation of the Polyester textile-to-textile trials that were started in mid-2022.

Accelerating Circularity’s mission is to launch new supply chains and business models that will transform used textiles into widely used raw materials. The goal is to create a society where textile waste is eliminated, and millions of tons of garbage are kept out of landfills and incinerators.

A collaborative, stakeholder-led strategy is the focus of the action-oriented nonprofit organization Advancing Circularity, which is dedicated to commercial textile-to-textile recycling. They started Polyester textile-to-textile experiments in the middle of 2022 and have been defining cellulosics’ products and value chains ever then; four value chains have been established thus far.

Ms. Karla Magruder, ACP founder, and president said that circularity is a team sport. They’ve been collaborating with more than 80 value chain participants from the EU’s 27 member states as well as Norway, Switzerland, the UK, Morocco, and Turkey. They concentrate on post-consumer textiles because they think they are too valuable to throw away. A textile is considered to be spent when it has gone through multiple cycles of repair, reuse, resale, and/or re-production and no longer has any immediate value. They can lessen the environmental effects of the textile business by preventing post-consumer discarded textiles from being disposed of, incinerated, or recycled.

Ms. Sirma Zheleva, Head of Sustainability at TexCycle, said, their partnership with Accelerated Circularity has provided them the opportunity to learn and strengthen their sorting procedures to enhance the quality of feedstock for textile-to-textile recycling. They think that the ACPE trials and their partnership with other value chain experts will make it possible for them to scale up textile-to-textile recycling and bring about circularity in the sector.

Ms. Maela Mandelli, Co-Founder, Pure Waste OY, said that the mission at Pure Waste is to offer recycled products and closed-loop solutions that inspire a change for a world without textile waste. They are thrilled to participate in the ACPE trials and to collaborate with many partners along a global supply chain to provide high-quality recycled products.

Furthermore, JUBEL.AI, a cutting-edge cloud-based platform with cutting-edge AI technology, supports the Accelerate Circularity trials. Unparalleled data-sharing capabilities provided by JUBEL.AI enable the cooperation and knowledge-sharing necessary for the success of these pilot studies.

Single jersey and Italian fleece apparel, woven light-weight shirts, and heavier-weight twill textiles will all be included in the product trial range. 40% recycled content is the desired percentage, of which post-consumer textile waste is to account for half. The target is to use at least 50 tons of post-consumer discarded textile feedstock across all products, and the best time frame for the initial development of fabrics is Spring 2023.
