PREFACE
Continuing its strive to create authentic and up-to-date information base for the textile community YnFx’s for the past few years have been releasing series of in-depth analytical reports on various fibre chains with global perspective. These reports are designed keeping in mind the users requirements especially to help the CEOs and the management team to take informed decisions. In the past, we had published four value chain reports, viz,
  • Polyester Chain Report
  • Nylon Chain Report
  • Acrylic Chain Report, and
  • Viscose Chain Report
These reports were well acknowledged by readers and found them to be of great value in their business planning and corporate development. Continuing with our efforts to serve you better, we are pleased to release this edition of the ‘Polyester Chain Report: 2012”. This “Polyester Chain Report: 2012” contains 163 pages packed with up-to-date ‘not easy to find’ statistics and objective analysis of the trends and recent development of the polyester Industry. It covers the entire polyester value chain beginning from ethylene and paraxylene further to intermediate – PTA & MEG, down to polyester fibre and filaments. The Report presents tabulation and graphical presentation of trends in demand and supply of polyester chain country-wise from 2006 to 2011 and projections up to 2017 for both fibre and filament. Processes description, end use and derivatives along with the latest producer-wise capacity are added feature of this report. The electronic version is available for Euro 500 or equivalent in other currency. Hard copy is available on request with printing and postage charges extra.
HIGHLIGHTS
Global capacities for polyester fiber reached 20.7 million ton a year by the end of 2011, where capacity increase for the year was 2.66 million ton. China was the main contributor to capacity expansion in 2011 and also the most important supplier of polyester fibers. In 2011, China has added 2.22 million ton of polyester fibre capacity taking its total capacity to 12.68 million ton a year. Total production capacity of polyester filament industry increased 5.4 million tons in 2011, as polyester manufacturer in 2010 earned enough and developed a strong will to expansion the capacity. Capital flow from others fields also desired to enter the polyester industry, as new capacity. The total capacity stood at 34.8 million tons in 2011. The Asian region accounted for the entire capacity expansion and accounted for over 39% of global capacity. Capacities in all the other regions had either declined or remained steady. Middle East was seen slowly moving up in capacity building. Global polyester filament market was troubled by over capacity. The emergence of new technologies, attractive margins, and high economic growth rate triggered capacity explosion in the industry far more than demand. Excess supply remained an issue despite substantial slowdown in capacity growth in numerous developing markets including China. Several players in the Western countries opted to consolidate and shut plants to deal with the increasing operating costs. Contrastingly, players in Asia-Pacific and in the Middle East have raised production capacities.
