Innovative project repurposes textile waste in Chile

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2025-03-25 15:48:49 – Chile

A groundbreaking initiative has been launched to tackle the growing textile waste problem in Chile’s Atacama Desert by making discarded clothing available to the public. This project, a collaboration between VTEX, Fashion Revolution Brazil, and Desierto Vestido, aims to address the estimated 39,000 tonnes of clothing dumped in the region each year, much of which comes from the US, Europe, and Asia.

The salvaged garments, collected from the desert’s massive waste piles, are available on the Re-commerce Atacama website. Before being listed, each item is carefully cleaned, inspected for quality, and repaired if necessary, giving it a second chance at use. While the clothing is free, buyers are required to cover shipping costs.

Mariano Gomide de Faria, CEO of VTEX, stressed that the project is not just about reselling clothing but about bringing attention to the impact of excessive consumerism in the fashion industry. He explained that the effort goes beyond standard e-commerce, encouraging people to rethink current production, consumption, and waste habits.

Fernanda Simon, Executive Director of Fashion Revolution Brazil, underscored the urgency of addressing textile waste, especially in the context of the climate crisis. She emphasized that this initiative helps highlight the hidden costs of fashion and promotes new, responsible ways to manage textile waste.
