MYGroup launches sustainable textile project in Sri Lanka

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2025-02-06 16:20:03 – United Kingdom

UK-based waste management and recycling company MYGroup is launching an innovative project in Sri Lanka to promote sustainable textile production and manufacturing. This initiative aims to empower local communities while building a socially and environmentally responsible supply chain for the company’s future products.

This initiative focuses on creating long-term, sustainable growth in Sri Lanka’s textile and fashion industries by employing and fairly compensating local artisans and workers, reviving traditional crafts, and boosting local economies, all while ensuring environmental sustainability.

To revive an industry that declined in the late 1970s, MYGroup has secured land in Uva province, where it plans to cultivate regenerative cotton. The project will use regenerative farming techniques to improve soil health, encourage biodiversity, and recycle nutrients without relying on pesticides.

To support rural communities and decentralize textile production from urban areas, MYGroup will install solar-powered equipment on-site for ginning and spinning the harvested cotton into yarn. The first cotton seeds will be planted this month, with the harvest expected in late summer.
