Rocket Lab installs largest automated fiber placement machine

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-08-13 15:51:05 – USA

Rocket Lab USA, Inc. has announced the installation of the largest automated fiber placement (AFP) machine into its Neutron rocket production line in Middle River, MD. This custom-built 99-ton, 39-foot-tall robotic machine, made by Electroimpact in Washington, will automate the production of the largest carbon composite rocket structures ever created.

The AFP machine, which recently completed final acceptance testing, will streamline the manufacturing of large composite structures for the Neutron launch vehicle. Equipped with a fully automated real-time inspection system, the AFP machine detects and reports defects in the carbon composite layers, ensuring high-quality standards for Rocket Lab’s reusable Neutron rockets. The machine is expected to save over 150,000 manufacturing hours, significantly speeding up production.

Rocket Lab founder and CEO Sir Peter Beck praised the AFP machine as a key component in building the world’s largest carbon composite rocket. The machine’s capabilities will not only support Neutron’s production but also benefit the Electron rocket and other aerospace projects. Beck highlighted the collaboration with Electroimpact and the innovative impact of the machine on the aerospace industry.

In addition to Neutron rocket components, the AFP machine will be used to produce smaller carbon composite structures, Electron rocket first stages, and various aerospace parts including spacecraft panels, solar panel substrates, and custom components for the industry.
