Toray, Elevated Materials partner to repurpose carbon fiber waste

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2024-07-18 12:44:41 – USA

Toray Composite Materials America, Inc., a leading manufacturer of carbon fiber and prepreg materials, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Elevated Materials to provide repurposing services for its Tacoma, Washington facility. Over the next three years, Elevated Materials will repurpose Toray's scrap prepreg materials, including slit-edge and full-width prepreg sheets.

Elevated Materials, dedicated to eliminating carbon fiber waste in the aerospace industry, has successfully diverted 200,000 pounds of carbon fiber waste through its upcycling process. The company transforms this waste into press-cured carbon fiber sheets, plates, and blocks for use in various industries, including sports equipment, manufacturing accessories, and drones.

This partnership reflects the shared commitment of both companies to sustainable solutions, aiming to reduce waste, conserve resources, and decrease pollution. Ryan Olliges, founder and CEO of Elevated Materials, highlighted the collaborative effort, stating, "Together, we are making significant strides towards a more sustainable future."

The MOU supports Toray’s sustainability vision, which includes achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and managing resources sustainably. Jeff Hawkey, senior vice president of operations at Toray, emphasized the initiative's role in reducing the company's environmental footprint and setting a new standard for responsible manufacturing.
