Teijin Frontier Co., Ltd., the Teijin Group’s fibers and products converting company, announced the creation of "Octa®sf," a polyester spun yarn offering a soft, gentle feel, light weight, moisture absorption, and heat retention for sportswear and outerwear textiles. This innovative yarn was developed using an ultra-fine staple fiber with a hollow, 8-fin modified cross-section, processed through specialized spinning and drawing techniques.

The gaps created by the 8-fin cross-section, combined with the softness of the fine-spun yarn, provide a gentle feel, natural fullness, and warmth. "Octa®sf" also offers practical benefits such as water absorption and diffusion, bulkiness and lightness from the fiber gaps, and heat retention due to trapped air. The unique cross-section and large gaps make it easy to blend with other natural fibers like wool and synthetic fibers such as lyocell, as well as with Teijin Frontier’s polyester functional materials, enabling a wide range of textile development.

Existing filament yarns with modified cross-sections often face limitations in achieving a soft texture due to the thickness and shape of the yarn. Teijin Frontier overcame this by creating an ultra-fine staple fiber with a hollow 8-fin cross-section. Using their specialized spinning and drawing technology, they developed "Octa®sf," a fine hollow 8-fin modified cross-section spun yarn that combines fluffiness, softness, comfort, and functionality.

The knitting structure and density settings for textiles using "Octa®sf" yarn are adjusted based on application requirements. The company optimizes dyeing and processing technology to achieve high-quality color and functionality.

Teijin Frontier plans to start selling textiles made from "Octa®sf" yarn for outdoor wear and sportswear in the fall/winter of 2025. The company aims to expand the material’s use into fashion apparel, targeting sales of 100,000 meters in fiscal 2025 and 500,000 meters by fiscal 2028.
