Freitag, known for its unique bags from repurposed truck tarps, introduces the Mono[P6], a fully circular backpack developed over three years. Unlike previous products, the Mono[P6] is crafted from a single material, emphasizing simplicity for recycling.
According to Anna Kerschbaumer, Freitag's portfolio planner, the Mono[P6] adopts the principle of mono-materiality, allowing for easy recycling of the entire backpack at the end of its life. Made from polyamide 6 (PA6), a versatile and recyclable plastic, the backpack offers both durability and environmental friendliness.
Developing the Mono[P6] involved creating 17 distinct elements from PA6, including fabric, zippers, straps, and padding. Though some minor components contain other materials, their proportions are minimal and still allow for mechanical recycling.
Freitag collaborated with a Taiwanese textile partner to develop a water-repellant, mono-material fabric exclusively for the Mono[P6]. Despite the challenges of sourcing and developing the material, Freitag aims to explore its use in other products in the future.
Designed in collaboration with Jeffrey Siu, the Mono[P6] combines functionality with urban style, reflecting Freitag's commitment to circular fashion. Initially, 1,500 backpacks will be available, with plans for further production.
Upon reaching the end of its life, customers can return the Mono[P6] to Freitag for recycling. The backpack is shredded and processed into PA6 granulate, ensuring a closed-loop recycling process that minimizes waste.
