Swedish packaging start-up Yangi, has received investment and active business support from the luxury brand Chanel and the global technology company Voith.

Based in Varberg, and a spin-off company of The Loop Factory based in the same Swedish city, Yangi has created a new manufacturing process for 3D-formed, cellulose-based packaging using dry forming principles on a single machine. This process allows for cost and resource savings and holds the promise of being able to replace rigid plastics on a large scale.

Yangi's dry forming technology uses less energy and less water than the energy- and water-intensive wet pulp moulding process, minimizing CO2 emissions and using 75% less energy. Applications for packaging solutions are numerous and include everything from consumer goods to fresh food, takeout, and cosmetics and beauty products.

The Loop Factory is currently working on projects including the chemical and mechanical recycling of textile waste as well as glass fiber-based acoustic wall and ceiling absorbers from the construction industry.

The Loop Factory's CEO Maria Ström, said that Yangi is a fantastic illustration of their entrepreneurial spirit and the goals of their business model. The mission of The Loop Factory is to drive system change for the circular economy and scale innovation faster.

Michael Weiss, CTO of Voith Paper, said that Voith's expertise as the top full-line provider to the paper industry and Yangi's competence in the dry processing of fibers open new opportunities for solutions. Fibre-based packaging is a viable substitute for plastic and will grow in popularity.
