Fast fashion brand, Shein, has made measures to cut emissions from its operations by 2030. Shein has teamed up with quality assurance company Intertek, to calculate its Scope 3 baseline emissions, quantify the impact of its 2021 carbon footprint, and identify Science-Based Targets through jointly held interactive workshops.
The following objectives of the partnership are being submitted via a commitment letter to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for approval:
Scope 1:: By 2030, cut the absolute emissions produced by Shein activities by 42%.
Scope 1:: By 2030, purchase certificates for renewable energy equal to 100% of the power utilized by Shein activities.
Scope 3: By 2030, cut absolute emissions by 25% throughout Shein's full production chain.
Shein will enhance expenditures in energy-saving initiatives across its operations, together with the purchase of renewable energy certificates, to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
Shein stated that it is "essential" that it interacts closely with knowledgeable partners to work on a transition to renewable energy sources and carbon reduction plans because Scope 3 accounts for the majority of the company's emissions.
To develop the roadmap for emissions reduction inside Shein's supply chain, Shein has announced that it will provide up to $7.6 million in programmatic support to Apparel Impact Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to decarbonizing and modernizing the fashion industry supply chain.
Adam Whinston, Global Head of ESG at Shein, said that they're taking a huge step forward, unveiling a new set of 2030 goals that will help them achieve carbon reduction targets for their entire supply chain over the next seven years. Their relationships serve as a further testament to their dedication to putting forward long-term plans to empower suppliers and advance sustainable innovation with a focus on lowering carbon emissions. This declaration reaffirms their firm commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainability activities.
