London and Reykjavík-based design studio RANRA, was chosen the recipient of the fourth Zalando Sustainability Award during Copenhagen Fashion Week.
The international jury was also taken with the design studio's "unexpected blend of colors and textures on the runway, which is not as frequent in more sustainable presentations," which particularly struck them.
The brand's collection was created with durability in mind, and the judges appreciated how many of the pieces were flexible and multifunctional.
A reward of £16,900 (€20,000) will be awarded to RANRA, along with a partnership with Zalando to create an exclusive collection that will further utilize more environmentally friendly design strategies for materials, production methods, technology advancements, and traceability.
Zalando also said that it will make a large portion of the spring/summer 2023 collection for the brand, which was shown at Copenhagen Fashion Week, available to its clients throughout 25 European regions.
The Zalando Sustainability Award panel, including buying director for women's apparel Alice Marshall, said that the judges and she were struck with the wonderful use of colors, and the interesting use of textiles in the outfits.
She added that due to the genderless nature of the collection, it appeals to all of its clients. They're excited to collaborate with RANRA to develop a capsule collection that focuses on the developments and innovations that Zalando customers want to see.
The founding members of RANRA, Arnar Mar Jonsson and Luke Stevens, added that they are honored to have their efforts recognized with such a distinguished prize. It has always been their intention to build a company that will change the way the market manufactures today, either by modifying current processes or reviving older strategies that provide more long-term answers to the problems the market is now facing. A significant step in clarifying this approach is receiving this prize. They are more inspired than ever to keep redefining sustainability and the limits of clothing design.
The goal of the Zalando Sustainability Award, which is administered in collaboration with Copenhagen Fashion Week, is to inspire fashion brands to investigate alternative methods of design and production in order to support the development of a more responsible, environmentally friendly fashion industry. Nikolaj Storm, House of Dagmar, and Tobias Birk Nielsen's Iso.Poetism has all won before.
