Plastic packaging maker Berry Global, headquartered in Evansville, Indiana, has signed a supply agreement with plastics recycler PureCycle Technologies Inc. that will provide Berry with PureCycle’s ultra-pure recycled (UPR) polypropylene resin.

Customers are turning to Berry for access to recycled materials and packaging design expertise as the need for sustainable products develops. Berry maintains its dominance in the converter market for recycled plastic material access, with a goal of 600 million pounds per year by 2025.

Berry understands the specific design requirements of brands' products in addition to its material access - combining material expertise with product specification needs opens up a variety of opportunities for sophisticated recycling technology to be utilized in the marketplace.

Berry uses advanced recycling to give difficult-to-recycle materials a new lease of life as food-grade packaging. While post-consumer resin frequently lacks the high clarity that customers need, circular resins from sophisticated recycling have it in spades.

PureCycle's proprietary recycling method removes color, odor, and impurities from plastic waste feedstocks, yielding ultra-pure recovered polypropylene. The recycling service turns discarded plastic into virgin-like plastic, completely closing the loop on recycled plastic reuse and making recycled polypropylene more accessible at scale to companies desiring to use a sustainable, recycled resin.

In summer 2023, the material will be delivered to Berry for processing at one of the company's ISCC PLUS certified facilities, ensuring maximum traceability for consumers. Berry had earlier announced that it has achieved ISCC PLUS certification at its first three plants in North America.
