Spanish recycled yarn manufacturer Ferre, has partnered with traceability solutions start-up The Movement to create fully traceable recycled cotton yarn using its blockchain-enabled product authentication technology. Ferre will use The Movement's Aware-branded 'tracer particles' in its products that can be traced across the supply chain.

Luis Pita, CEO of Ferre yarns, said that they aim to disclose the traceability and sustainability performance of their goods to drive positive change and meet customer demand for true transparency in fashion.

Ferre recycled yarns are embedded with Aware tracer particles in this process, and each production batch is tokenized on a public blockchain. Ferre yarns may be scanned and identified along the supply chain, including in finished goods. To validate mass balance and impact claims, the digital tokens follow the physical yarn on blockchain till it reaches the finished product.

Ferre, which has been around for 75 years, is passionate about circular fashion and is continually exploring new ways to make recycled yarns for sustainable companies and manufacturers.

Ferre uses Recover, which is regarded as the lowest-impact recycled cotton fiber on the market today, to spin high-quality recycled yarns for all forms of garments, accessories, and home textiles.

According to the company, recycled cotton is by far the most environmentally friendly cotton on the market, and because it is manufactured from post-industrial cutting clips and post-consumer clothing, there is no additional water used in the fiber and yarn production process.

Ferre's own in-house lab has developed a unique color blending method that allows the company to manufacture any color of recycled cotton yarn without dyeing, according to the company.

Ferre, on the other hand, maintains that over 80% of customers do not accept final brand sustainability promises and that only genuine traceability can restore trust in the apparel industry and prevent greenwashing.

Pita said that all of their sustainability claims are backed up by the most trusted third-party certifications, as well as research they've done utilizing LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology. By incorporating Aware tracking technology into their yarns, their customers can be confident that the promises made about their end products manufactured from their yarn are accurate.
