Evian water and San Francisco-based fashion company, Rothy's are collaborating to recycle water bottles from this year's US Open into a limited-edition tennis-inspired capsule collection set to launch in September 2022.

The plan is to repurpose Evian bottles from the tennis tournament as part of a capsule line of courtside necessities created with Rothy's low-waste, circular-focused manufacturing technique. Each Evian bottle will be mixed with other recycled plastic bottles to create a soft, washable thread, which Rothy's will use to knit each item in the capsule collection, leaving minimal waste behind.

The capsule will cater to active lifestyles with Rothy’s design team exploring everything from gear to accessories like headgear and tennis bags, as well as perhaps branching out into new categories.

Saskia van Gendt, Rothy's head of sustainability, said that the Rothy's x Evian relationship is an opportunity for their team to develop a first-of-its-kind capsule collection and push the limits of Rothy's design and production capabilities. As Rothy's works toward its goal of circular production, it’s looking forward to creating and expanding novel recycling solutions. They're excited to repurpose recycled Evian bottles into attractive, high-quality items as part of a circular design project that begins where another product's life may have ended.

Rothy's creates all of its products in its wholly-owned workplace, utilizing world-class knitting technology to make almost waste-free footwear and accessories. Rothy's stated in March 2021 that by 2023, the company will have achieved circular manufacturing, pioneering the shoe recycling technique to combine twice-recycled components into new goods. It has also committed to investing in natural-based carbon reductions for every mile of shipping, with the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2023.

Smeeta Khetarpaul, marketing director for Evian US, said that they’re pleased to work with Rothy's, a business that shares their dedication to circularity, to produce a capsule collection utilizing recycled Evian bottles for their consumers to enjoy. The sustainability pioneers at Rothy's are the ideal partner to bring something like this to life.

Evian, like Rothy's, is working toward a closed-loop future. Currently, the water brand's bottles include an average of 40% rPET across the board, and the business plans to use 100% recycled plastic in all of its plastic bottles by 2025, taking a "circular approach" to plastic consumption. Evian was been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
