The first edition of the UN Global Compact Network India's ‘National Innovative and Sustainable Supply Chain Awards’ recognized a recycling project by cellulosic fiber manufacturer Birla Cellulose, which is part of the Aditya Birla Group.

Liva Reviva by Birla Cellulose and Fully Traceable Circular Global Fashion Supply Chains, a project case study proposed by the organization, was recognised for resolving the problems of textile waste being incinerated or landfilled due to a lack of recycling technology, as well as the lack of traceability in long and complicated fashion supply chains.

Birla's Liva Reviva viscose fiber is made up of 80% wood pulp and 20% pre-consumer cotton fabric waste, and it has been certified as RCS (Recycled Claim Standard). The fiber has been embraced by several major brands since its introduction in 2020, and close relationships through global supply chains have aided in the development of viable reverse logistics, as well as generating higher value for textile waste for small-scale waste recyclers.

The blockchain-based GreenTrack network allows Birla's fibres to be monitored in real time across the supply chain, from certified forests to the end user. This journey can also be experienced by customers by checking a QR code.

Birla Cellulose is focusing on expanding the use of renewable feedstocks such as textile waste and is committed to accelerating developments that are in line with the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

The business director of Birla Cellulose, Dilip Gaur said that they are honoured to have been recognized for their approach to upcycling textile waste, reducing the need for virgin materials, and establishing accountability in the dynamic fashion supply chain.

The executive director of UN Global Compact Network India, Shabnam Siddiqui added that outstanding case studies from prestigious organizations with noteworthy contributions to the development and application of advanced and safe supply chain activities were included in the first edition of the awards. They congratulate Birla Cellulose on its ground-breaking role in accelerating supply chain circularity and transparency in such a short period of time.
