What is modal?

Modal, also referred to as high wet modulus rayon (HMV), is a sustainable alternative to viscose rayon. The raw material for the manufacturing of modal is cellulose extracted from the hardwood trees such as birch and oak while the processing is chemical-based thus making modal a regenerated fabric.

Modal was first manufactured by the Austria-based textile giant Lenzing AG also known for the development of other synthetic fabrics such as nylon and polyester. However, the fiber was first developed in Japan in 1951 and was launched in the market in 1964.

HMV rayon is often replaced with cotton and silk for its soft handle and lustrous appearance and is often blended with cotton and other synthetic fibers. The fabric is widely used in the apparel sector for its properties such as breathability and comfort to the wearer.
