How is recycled wool produced?

In an attempt to save natural resources extending the lifespan of wool fiber is necessary. For which recycling is done. It helps in producing a recycled wool fabric with much less environmental impacts and exhibits the same properties as that of virgin wool.

Firstly, wool to be recycled is collected via pre-consumer (cutting scraps or any excess yarn production) and post-consumer (unwanted or discarded garments) sources. After collection, the wool goes through a meticulous sorting on the basis of colour. Then, pass through a mechanical shredder that breaks the yarn and fabric into small pieces and further into raw fiber. These fibers are then spun into new yarns. Producer carefully selects and blends the colours of dyed wool to achieve the desired colour. Thereby, completely eliminating the dying process. Recycling process uses significantly less energy than what is used in producing new fabrics.

Sometimes, recycled wool is blended with recycled polyester to increase yarn length which in turn increases yarn strength. The demand for recycled wool is foreseen to increase because of its environmental benefits but still has a long way to go.
