What are the environmental impacts of coir fiber?

As per the weight the coconut fiber consists of about one-third of coconut pulp and the rest two-third part is the pitch or coir dust. This dust is the waste that is produced during the processing of coir fiber which takes about 20 years to decompose as a result a huge pile of coir dust rests in coir producing countries such as India and Sri Lanka.

Also, the processing of coir fiber leads to water pollution that is caused due to retting. The effluent water released in the water bodies consists of bacteria such as salmonella and organic pollutants such as pectin, tannin and toxic polyphenols. Also, the amount of water required to wash one cubic metre of coir pith is about 300-600 liters.
