Piura, coastal region in northern Peru during the upcoming cotton campaign have decided to plant cotton on more than 4,000 hectares of land to promote cultivation of cotton, especially in the Lower Piura territory of the region. They aim to restore the status of the region as one of the biggest cotton producers in the country
According to a statement issued by the regional government of Piura, the decision was announced during a meeting of the Peruvian agricultural agency La Union, the chairman of the irrigation committees, and representatives of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, to discuss the next cotton cultivation campaign of the region.
Angel Garcia, regional manager of economic development in Piura, said that unlike the previous season where cotton was planted only on 1,000 hectares of land in the region, the aim of the government is to cultivate cotton on more than 4,000 hectares of land.
Garcia said that the cotton growers of the region would have the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), which would provide them funding through the Pima Activity and National Incentive Plan, that can help them to cultivate cotton on more than 4,000 hectares.
Garcia has also assured to send the document to Minagri for speed up the funding of the campaign, so that it arrives quickly and timely to the cotton farmers of the region.
The regional manager of economic development said that the irrigation committees need to approve plans that have been developed by the Ad hoc Committees of the Middle and Lower Piura territories for cotton planting before February 2014, as cotton cultivation has already begun in these areas since the first week of January.
Last week, the government of the Piura region convened a meeting of the manufacturers of cotton, irrigation committees, agricultural organizations and officials to begin the cotton campaign in the region and signed agreements regarding the water supply for cotton producers during the season.
